Moving Pets and Plants
Moving your pets...
When moving, your family pets will require special care and consideration, both for transportation and adjustment to their new home. The first decision you need to make is whether you will take your pet with you in your car or ship it via airline or other commercial transportation.
If your pet travels with you in the car, it will retain a sense of security. You will need to make special preparations, however, to make the journey easier for both you and your pet. Be sure to have a leash, food, and water dish readily available. When making travel arrangements, remember to check if pets will be allowed in your hotel en route.
Sending your pet by air may make your own travel arrangements easier. Most airlines can sell you an approved shipping container and they will be familiar with the care and handling requirements for live animals. Also, rely upon your Veterinarian for advice regarding transport sedatives for your pet and other special health requirements.
When you arrive at your new home, help your pet’s adjustment by surrounding them with familiar items, toys, etc. Give them extra attention until they establish new routines.
Moving your house plants . . .
House plants are very sensitive to environmental changes and the risks associated with moving them are high. You may want to consider finding your plants a good home and replacing them with new ones suited to your new location.
If you want to take them in your car, never put them in the trunk where high or low temperature extremes can prove fatal. A good florist or greenhouse may be able to offer some helpful suggestions on protecting your plants during the drive.
